THE POLANYI LECTURE Elementary Radical Reactions and Autoignitisn

چکیده
The kinetics of the elementary reactions involved in the low-temperature combustion of alkanes are reviewed. The reactions are centred on the alkyl radical and its decomposition, recombination and reactions with 0,. A combination of theory, modelling and direct measurements, using especially laser flash photolysis, have played key roles in the characterisation of all three reaction types. A remaining area of uncertainty is the mechanism of the R + 0, reaction and the interplay of channels leading to the alkyl hydroperoxyl radical and to the conjugate alkene + HO, . A mechanism based on two electronic surfaces is proposed.

Application of runaway reaction mechanism generation to predict and control reactive hazards
Many industrial incidents are caused by thermal runaway reactions. Therefore, a good understanding of runaway reactions is necessary to predict and control reactive hazards. A detailed kinetic modeling approach is proposed to simulate runaway reactions under industrial conditions. This paper addresses the first step of this approach-mechanism generation. Computational chemistry was employed to ...
متن کاملIdentification of general linear relationships between activation energies and enthalpy changes for dissociation reactions at surfaces.
The activation energy to reaction is a key quantity that controls catalytic activity. Having used ab inito calculations to determine an extensive and broad ranging set of activation energies and enthalpy changes for surface-catalyzed reactions, we show that linear relationships exist between dissociation activation energies and enthalpy changes. Known in the literature as empirical Brønsted-Eva...
متن کاملTwo Cultures Revisited: Michael Polanyi on the Continuity Between the Natural Sciences and the Study of Man
Keywords: Snow's problem, Michael Polanyi, the natural sciences, the study of man, continuity and distinction. Polanyi's response to Snow's problem is a two-step strategy. First, he undermines the supposed gap between the natural sciences and the study of man and establishes the continuity between them. Second, based upon what is achieved in the first step, he explores the distinctions between ...
متن کاملCatalytic activity of transition metal doped Cu(111) surfaces for ethanol synthesis from acetic acid hydrogenation: a DFT study
Transition metal (Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd and Pt) doped Cu(111) models are selected to examine the effects of transition metals on Cu surface for ethanol synthesis from acetic acid hydrogenation using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. On these surfaces, the adsorption of the main intermediates and reaction barriers of key elementary steps are investigated. The calculation results indicat...
متن کاملPhotochemical Exploration of Reaction Dynamics at Catalytic Metal Surfaces: From Ballistics to Statistics
Surfaces form the working template upon which much of the world’s technologically important chemistry occurs.1 Catalysis, corrosion, adhesion, friction/lubrication, and materials growth all depend critically upon interfacial chemistry. This account discusses how photochemical methods can be exploited to explore the fundamental dynamics of elementary catalytic reactions occurring at the gas/meta...
